Choosing Organic Cotton

Choosing Organic Cotton

Before a garment becomes something we wear, a choice has already been made about the materials behind it.

We looked closely at the materials most commonly used in everyday clothing today: synthetic fibers, recycled synthetic fibers, conventional cotton, and organic cotton.

Synthetic fibers are light and easy to care for. They have shaped modern clothing through their performance and versatility. However, they are made from petrochemical materials and present challenges when considering the full life cycle of a garment.

Recycled synthetic fibers give existing materials another purpose and help reduce waste. At the same time, they retain some of the characteristics of synthetic fibers, including concerns around microplastics released during repeated washing.

Cotton has been valued for generations for its breathability and natural comfort. Conventional cotton, however, is often cultivated using genetically modified seeds, synthetic fertilizers, and chemical pesticides to achieve higher yields.

Organic cotton follows a different path. It is cultivated through farming practices designed to maintain healthier soil and support a more balanced ecosystem.

The fiber itself is only the beginning.

The character of a garment emerges through what follows: where the cotton is grown, how the yarn is spun, how the fabric is constructed, and how it is finished.

This is why GOTS certification matters. It allows us to look beyond the surface and understand more about the material, from farming practices and processing methods to the people involved throughout the manufacturing process.

Choosing organic cotton means choosing a material whose story begins long before it becomes a garment.
